Augusta Lena Smith Larson

Gus

In the 1830s settlers began arriving in Iowa from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana, Kentucky, and Virginia. Iowa became a state in 1846.

Augusta Lena Smith Larson was born on June 8, 1898  in Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa. She was nicknamed Gus or Gussie. Her parents were Josiah Smith and Eliza Fox. She attended Red Oak High School.

Augusta never enjoyed good health. She suffered from asthma, stomach problems, and bladder trouble. She loved to read light romances and poetry. Many written memories of Gus are in the Wind in the Willow.

She married Raymond C. Larson on December 9, 1921 in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. Raymond was born on October 5, 1901 in Iowa. Gus was 23 and Raymond was only 20 when they married. His parents were Ole T. Larson and Ellen Marie Colby. Gus met him while he was attending a school for mechanics in Sioux City and she worked in a dime store.

Gus and Ray had one daughter, Twyla Mae Larson King. In the early years of their marriage they farmed.

They moved to town in the 1930s. The family appeared in the 1930 census in Douglas Township, Sac County, Iowa. The family consisted of Raymond age 28 who was a farmer, Agusta (sic) who was also listed as age 28, and Twyla M. who was four years old.

Her mother, Eliza, lived with Gus at the time of her death.

Ray died in January, 1970 and Gus died in Loring Hospital on October 24, 1972 of a severe stroke at age 72.
